The skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are of vital importance in many areas, both in the daily world and the world of the imagination. Not only are they essential in many careers, they also underpin successful study at all levels, and a proficiency in them can also add immeasurably to an individual's general quality of life. The specification is designed to aid and assess such development, and to encourage learners to be inspired, moved and changed by following a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study.

Whats Next?
We aim to improve your spelling, punctuation, technical accuracy, and develop your ability to write in different styles for different purposes. In addition, we hope to encourage you to read more widely and respond to works of literature. As oral work is an important part of the coursework, we will also enable you to develop your speaking and listening skills in a variety of situations.
Entry onto the course is dependent upon the student having already achieved a grade D in GCSE (in the higher paper). If a student has previously achieved a D grade in the foundation paper, they will be asked to undertake and achieve a satisfactory standard in a diagnostic test. Mature student applicants may have the opportunity to gain this qualification based on experience, prior knowledge and satisfactory performance in a diagnostic test.

How is the course assessed:

GCSE English is part coursework, part examination assessed:

Unit 1: WRITTEN PAPER 20% (1 hour examination) English in the daily world (reading) non-fiction texts Unit 2: WRITTEN PAPER 20% (1 hour examination) English in the daily world (writing) information and ideas Unit 3: CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT 40% English in the world of the imagination; Reading- Literary text -two assignments (10% each) ; Writing-open writing two assignments (10% each) Unit 4: CONTROLLED ASSESMENT 20% Speaking and listening: communicating and adapting language; interacting and responding, creating and sustaining roles.

A good standard of literacy skills both written and spoken are essential for supporting progression into any field of employment.
